Great River Access to the Nenana and Susitna Rivers

We took this video one evening while we were taking a drive along the beautiful Denali Hig

If you enjoy floating the river, there are many places to put in along the Nenana and Susitna Rivers.

A great wooden bridge crosses over the wide expanse of the Susitna River, automatically throwing you into a different time when Alaska's highways were all dirt roads, and you had to put your trust in a rickety old wooden bridge.

The Susitna River along the Denali Highway, AlaskaThe landscape along both sides of the highway is one unique to itself.

The land is full of small lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, yet the ground is very hard and full of rocks.

Finding a place to pitch a tent would have been near impossible if it wasn’t for our sleeping pads we brought with us, and driving the tent stakes into the ground was impossible.

 Wilderness Camping At Its Best

Camping along the river on the Denali Highway, AlaskaAlaska's Denali Highway is great for the fact that most anywhere on either side of the road is up for camping. Most people brought in Rvs and camper trailers (which is ideal considering the terrain) but we took our tent as did a few others.

If you are taking in a tent, chances are you will be camping near to your truck, so bring your blowup mattress or sleeping pad…cause you are going to need it!

A word to the wise, if camping with pets up in Alaska, make sure you have some form of bug spray for them as well. The mosquitoes will drive whole herds of caribou mad, and our poor Malamute just about went mad himself…even with spray.

To Deet Or Not To Deet

Malamute camping with the bugs on the Denali Highway, AlaskaUse DEET products sparingly and wisely. There are other forms of mosquito repellent available.

Try to avoid using regular mosquito spray on animals. The chemicals are harsh on their skin and eyes. Instead use pet friendly bug repellents, or keep your pets inside with you.

We ended up having our Malamute sleep in our tent with us and the kids, so it was a good thing we brought our 6 person tent!

Also, when camping in and around Denali Highway, Alaska, bring your own water for you and your pets. The ponds and rivers up here in Denali, Alaska do contain giardia, and most of the water contains a lot of silt deposits. So buy a water filter system that can handle (I can’t stress this enough) HIGH amounts of silt.
