The Famous Northern Lights

Aurora Borealis AlaskaAre you curious as to how and why they appear? Browse through our books and find out more about the northern lights.

How do we manage to live through an Alaska winter? Simple! Think of this…if it wasn’t for the dark, you could never witness the magic of the northern lights, or aurora borealis.

Visit the Geophysical Institute website, provided by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is a great site for information on the Auroras, what they are, how to view them, and a detailed forecast on when they are visible.

The northern lights literally dance and swirl there way through the sky. View more images of the aurora borealis.

They come crashing through the sky in great waves, pulsating from bright displays of green, yellow and blue, then dimming to resemble a faint green cloud in the distance.

Once you have spotted and aurora, prepare to be memorized for hours. The only thing that will keep you from a total state of hypnosis…is the cold. One of the most spectacular displays I witnessed was at -40. It was cold, but not undoable. So be prepared with warm socks, boots, bibs, hat, gloves, and parka; and you will be just fine.
