Denali, Alaska has everything the avid outdoorsman could ever hope for. With year round hunting, rivers and streams, lakes and forests, mountains and trails…if you are looking for it, Denali has it.

Backpacking, climbing, 4 wheeling, fishing, horseback riding, whitewater rafting; and with the midnight sun, there is no bedtime. A favorite saying of fisherman is ‘I’ll be home when it’s dark’.

The Downside To Denali Alaska?

Alaskan MooseI have had a lot of people ask me what the downside is to Denali, Alaska...wow, I've been trying hard to think of what I can say that is bad about living in Denali...and I am having a really hard time thinking of anything.

The hardest part about the midnight sun is knowing when to go to bed. You'll be outside enjoying yourself, and then realize that it is midnight, and you still have to get up early in the morning!

Ok, don't come to Denali if you shop at Wal-Mart everyday. Wal-Mart is 2 hours away...one-way. So if you want to go to Wal-Mart, Old Navy, Barnes & Nobles, or the movie theater...it's a 4-5 hour drive (depending on how many RVs you get behind). So there is one downside.

That is not to say that there is nothing to do in the summer time. The 'Canyon' has alot of nice little shops, and there is a subway that is open 24 hrs. There is a GREAT little farmer's market just down the road as well.

If you are coming up, try to bring a car. It can be the pits being stuck up here without any transportation. Don't worry about any 'wilderness' hiking...the Park likes to advertise it as being in the 'wilderness' but they like to keep their guests VERY comfortable...so I wouldn't worry about being without running water...even their dry cabins are VERY nice.

Bring lots of bandannas and bug spray. The mosquitoes are bad, especially out on the tundra, but if you spray down you'll be fine. Ok, another downside for you...the wind. The wind can REALLY blow in the canyon and park. Bring alot of windbreaker type stuff. The wind isn't constant, which is nice...but it can get REALLY windy.

Gosh, that's about all I can think of at the moment. So mosquitoes are bad, (you'll live if you have bug-spray), lots of wind, town is 2 hours away, and you'll want a car/bike for transportation. Those are the downsides that I can think of.
